How to compare country taxes fairly
Why top rates mislead, what an effective rate shows, and which deductions belong in a salary comparison.
International tax tables often compare the highest statutory rate. That is easy to publish and rarely answers what an employee will actually keep.
Use the same income basis
Convert gross income into each local currency before applying that country’s brackets. Taxing the same numeric amount in every currency creates meaningless results. Keep and disclose the exchange rate used.
Include mandatory employee charges
Payroll social insurance, pension, unemployment and health charges can rival income tax. A take-home comparison that omits them systematically flatters contribution-heavy systems.
Keep employer cost separate
Employer payroll charges do not come out of stated gross salary, but they matter when comparing total compensation or hiring locations. Show both take-home and total employer cost rather than blending them.
